Teaching English as a Second Language

This program offers intensive, short-term teacher training leading to a TESL certificate, issued by a recognized, government accredited post-secondary institute. Graduates of this 120-hour program will find ESL teaching positions abound in the international marketplace, private language schools, and private tutoring. TESL is an affordable alternative to other English Language teacher training programs, which require a bachelor’s degree.

Admission Requirements:

Minimum Grade 12 diploma or equivalent, completed application form including English skills test, consent for criminal records search and satisfactory standard of English. Must be at least 20 years of age and must have a level of education that allows entry to higher education in their own country. International students should have one of the following scores: TOEFL 590, Grade B Cambridge, or VEC Level 6B Average.

*Duration: 120 hours/20 weeks

Practicum: 24 hours/1 week

Program Courses:

  • Unit 1: Introduction to ESL; English as a world language; theoretical and practical aspects of teaching ESL; teaching methodologies and their effects on learning; classroom management.
  • Unit 2: Teaching grammar and vocabulary; understanding the structure of English.
  • Unit 3: Teaching speaking and listening
  • Unit 4: Teaching reading and writing
  • Unit 5: Teaching pronunciation
  • Unit 6: Curriculum and instruction teaching English as a second language; lesson planning and curriculum construction for teaching different learning levels and contexts; teaching adults, children, immigrants, international students, etc.
  • Unit 7: ESL tests; teaching for academic purposes, test preparation, business English, specialized course; using technology in a classroom.
  • Unit 8: Social and cultural dimensions of ESL; culture shock; international and domestic markets, teacher development.
